Sydney Earl Pulver

November 21, 1927 — March 23, 2026

Philadelphia, PA

Sydney E. Pulver, M.D., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a gifted psychoanalyst whose curiosity and compassion never dimmed, died peacefully on March 23, 2026, in Philadelphia. He was 98.

Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1927, Syd spent his childhood in northeastern Pennsylvania, where he grew up around his father’s restaurants and developed a lifelong love of reading—often riding his bike to the library with his sister Lois perched on the handlebars. He left high school to serve in the United States Army during World War II, from 1945 to 1947, attaining the rank of Second Lieutenant.

A keen observer of people from an early age, Syd devoted his career to understanding people and helping them heal. He approached his work with deep humanity, and he remained devoted to his patients and his psychoanalytic community into his final days, continuing to practice until the end with the same steady presence and compassion that defined his long and distinguished career. He earned his undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he later taught. Trained in medicine, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis, and long affiliated with Philadelphia’s medical community, he was widely respected by colleagues and profoundly valued by his patients and students. A prolific writer and thinker, he published extensively and was the recipient of numerous awards recognizing his contributions to psychoanalysis, clinical practice, and teaching.

But Syd’s life extended far beyond his professional accomplishments. He was, in every sense, a renaissance man. He flew airplanes, rode motorcycles, went skiing, and found great pleasure in cooking. He loved the quiet ritual of a good cigar and, for as long as he could, the thrill of driving his Porsche. He had a deep love for literature and music, especially the works of Shakespeare and Gilbert and Sullivan. Known for his humor, he loved telling jokes and often laughed at his own punchline louder than anyone else. He brought warmth and laughter into every room he entered.

Above all, Syd was a devoted family man. He made sure the people in his life felt truly loved, and he created a family bound together by affection, humor, and tradition. When he died, what mattered most to him was evident: his bedroom walls were covered top to bottom with photographs of his family. He cherished time together and built lasting traditions, including annual family trips that became treasured memories across generations.

Syd shared 71 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Phyllis Pulver, who was his constant partner in life. Together they raised a close-knit family, traveled widely, and built a life grounded in love. He cared for her with devotion and tenderness in her later years, and her presence remained central to his life always.

Syd was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis, and his sister, Lois. He is survived by his children, Mitchell Pulver, Bradley Pulver, and Susan Mardinly; his daughters-in-law, Sheila Pulver and Lauren Pulver; his son-in-law, Peter Mardinly; his grandchildren, Jessica Pulver, Daniel Pulver, Alan Mardinly, and Shaina Mardinly; and their spouses, Eric Senecal, Suzy Pulver, Kristin Smith, and Jonathan Nahas. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Leo, Piper, Sal, Maya, Charlotte, Avi, Sadie, and Penny.
