Sally Tweedie

January 27, 1932 — September 7, 2023

Kennett Square, PA

Sally Tweedie was born on January 27, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan. Sally passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones on September 07, 2023 in Kennett Square, PA.

Sally spent her childhood years living in many locations including Michigan, Georgia,  California and New York as her father trained and served in the Army during WWII. She attended the University of Michigan where she met her future husband Del.  After graduating, she and Del had three children and Sally stayed home to raise them. During this time she was active in the Unitarian Universalist fellowships  in all the different communities where they lived, following Del's various career moves from Midland, Michigan, to Upland, California, and Charleston, West Virginia, and finally Malvern, Pennsylvania where they stayed for many years.  At the Main Line Unitarian Church in Devon, PA Sally taught Sunday school  for 16 years. Sally decided to pursue a career after all the children were in school and earned her M.S. in Library Science at Villanova University.  An avid lover of children and books, Sally went on to work for many years as a school librarian at K.D. Markley Elementary School in Malvern.  One highlight of her career was when she was awarded a grant celebrating the U.S. Bicentennial in 1975 for which she and Del documented all the buildings in East Whiteland township still standing that existed in 1775. She learned about and told her students about the Battle of the Clouds which took place in their township.  Afterwards some of her students found a button in the woods in that area which turned out to have been from the uniform of a Continental Congress soldier.  Sally was adventurous and enthusiastically assisted Del on many outdoor hiking and camping trips. She held an interest in many topics throughout her life including women's rights, racial equality and natural foods.

In addition to her library work, Sally was an impassioned genealogist. She and Del spent much of their time traveling to England and Scotland and she produced many well documented pages of family history. Throughout her travels, Sally chose to spread positivity and the love of learning with her community and the world at large.

She is predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Adelbert (Del) Tweedie. Sally is survived by her sister Dori of Sterling MA, three children, Katie Covey, Longmont, CO, Sue Sim, Davis, CA, and Ian Tweedie, Severna Park, MD/Abuja, Nigeria; her 7 grandchildren: Pete, Brett, Allen, Will, Jake, Michelle and Stu; and her 7 great-grandchildren: Felix, Leeda, Marlo, Zeffie, Evelyn, Genevieve and Esmeray.
