Reverend Robert "Bob" Guy Coombe

May 31, 1950 - May 18, 2025

Reverend Robert "Bob" Guy Coombe—known affectionately as Robbie, Revy, or The Rev to many who loved him—passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 18, 2025, just days before what would have been his 75th birthday.

Bob's journey began in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, where he was born on May 31, 1950. As the son of an airplane mechanic, his childhood was filled with travel and diverse experiences that shaped his remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His mother, a Sunday School teacher, planted the seeds of faith that would blossom into Bob's lifelong devotion to spiritual service.

For 47 years, Bob served as a pastor whose ministry transcended the traditional boundaries of the church. After graduating from Wyomissing College, his path led him through Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Illinois, VISTA Volunteer work in New York, and Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., where he earned his Masters of Divinity. His calling brought him to serve numerous congregations, including Cookman United Methodist Church (UMC) and Lindley UMC in Philadelphia, Union UMC in Havertown, Yardley UMC, and First United Methodist Church of Germantown in Philadelphia.

It was while serving at his first church that Bob met Carol Coombe, who was applying for a daycare position. Their union would gift Bob with what he considered his greatest blessing: his family. Together they welcomed son Jeffrey and daughter Jessica, who would grow his legacy through their own families.

Anyone who had the privilege of knowing Bob would tell you about his infectious laugh and unforgettable smile. He possessed the rare gift of making everyone feel seen, valued, and worthy of joy. His signature phrase, "peace be with you," wasn't just words—it was a genuine offering from a man who embodied peace in his actions. Bob didn't speak of hearing God's dramatic call; rather, he simply said "yes" to the opportunities for service that appeared before him, following a divine path through humble daily choices.

Bob's commitment to social justice and inclusion was unwavering. He devoted himself to numerous organizations including the Committee on Native American Ministries, the Philadelphia Unemployment Project, and BASIS Methodist Home for Children. He was a steadfast advocate for LGBTQ+ rights through his work with Affirmation LGBT support group and the Reconciling Ministries network. As a founding member of the Methodist Federation for Social Action, he worked tirelessly to address issues of peace, poverty, and people's rights.

While his spiritual work was central to his life, Bob embraced joy in many forms. A passionate Philadelphia sports enthusiast, he cheered faithfully for the Phillies and Eagles through victories and defeats. His annual trips to Phillies Spring Training were cherished traditions, as were the countless games he attended with his children and grandchildren. The magic of Disney World captivated him repeatedly, especially when experienced through the eyes of his beloved grandkids. His fishing expeditions to Northern Quebec since the 1970s—a tradition he passed to his son Jeff—provided moments of peaceful connection with nature and family alike. For over three decades, the shores of Long Beach Island, New Jersey, served as the backdrop for precious family memories.

Above all, Bob's greatest passion was his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his son Jeffrey Coombe and wife Melissa; daughter Jessica Treacy and husband Mike; grandchildren James, Ethan, Thomas, Marissa, and Savannah; ex-wife Carol Coombe; sister Lila Bartosiewicz and husband Pete; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Robert, mother Marian, and sister Cindy Johnson.

In a world that often moves too quickly to notice the quiet acts of kindness, Bob reminded us of their power. He made friends everywhere, offered non-judgmental presence to all he encountered, and was steadfastly present for those in need. His was a life measured by the countless lives he touched with genuine care.

A service celebrating Bob's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, May 24th at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Germantown on 6001 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA. A luncheon at the church will follow. Friends and family are encouraged to wear Phillies attire to celebrate Bob, the Fightin’ Phils most unwavering fan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Methodist Home for Children, an organization near and dear to Bob’s heart.

Peace be with you, Bob. You are deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
