Phillip Wayne Sumpter, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, and formerly of Port Deposit, Maryland, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025. He was 72 years old.

Born on June 2, 1953, Phillip was the son of the late Joseph Ralph and Helen Sumpter. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Judy Wilson (Scotty). Phillip was a loving brother to William, Gary, and Joseph (April). He is survived by his cherished wife of 20 years, Tomi Sumpter, and her children, Krista Ferguson (Adam) and Thomas D'Alesio (Karen). Phil was a proud grandfather to Thomas D'Alesio, Adam, Lila, Zoey, and Evan Ferguson, and Allie and Emma D'Alesio. He will be dearly missed by his beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, cherished neighbors, and many friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Tomi Sumpter, with whom he shared 20 years, and her children, Krista Ferguson (Adam) and Thomas D'Alesio (Karen). Phil was a proud grandfather to Thomas D'Alesio, Adam, Lila, Zoey, and Evan Ferguson, and Allie and Emma D'Alesio.

Phillip proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1978 through 1989. His dedication to service profoundly shaped his life, and his devotion to family, community, and country remained a constant source of pride and purpose. After retiring from the Navy, Phillip continued his commitment to public service, working for and later retiring from the Cecil County School District.

Deeply involved in his local community, Phillip served as the past Commander of the Sons of American Legion Post 135 and was an active member of the White Clay Fly Fishers. A true automotive enthusiast, he and his 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 were proud members of the Recycled Teenage Cruisers.

The family is profoundly grateful to the Penn Medicine Home Health Care team for their compassionate care of Phil.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on July 11th at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick's Church,

212 Meredith St, Kennett Square. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Phil's honor to the American Heart Association at www.heart.org.
