Drexel Hill, PA

Norma Jean Carliss, 81, of Drexel Hill, PA, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2024. She was the devoted wife of the late Ernest A. Carliss Jr. of Chester, PA. Born on October 14, 1942, in Upland, PA, Norma Jean was the daughter of the late Thomas J.(Reds)Sr. and Sara (Polly) Holden.

A 1961 graduate of Chichester High School, Norma Jean furthered her education at Bourbon Cosmetology School. She was passionate about music and founded the Chichester Community Alumni Band, where she played the saxophone. In her honor, a scholarship for a student musician has been established. Norma also enjoyed a vibrant career, bartending at Friendly Tavern in New Jersey in her early years and later working as a Claims Adjuster with Allstate Insurance Company, retiring after 15 years. Despite her professional success, her true passions remained music and hairstyling.

Norma's greatest joy was her family, spending holidays and Sunday dinners with family and friends at Redman and Polly’s. She was cherished by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her Mama Jean. She delighted in spending time with them, doing crafts, and watching them grow. Her legacy lives on in the precious memories shared with her loved ones. A devoted Phillies fan and an Elvis enthusiast, Norma’s warmth and spirit will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her children Laurn L. (Jill), Ernest A. III (Alice), and Adam H. (Cheryl) Carliss; her sisters Sally Holden and Linda DiDomenicis; her brother Thom J. Holden Jr.; and her cherished grandchildren; Clifton, Devon, Grace, Thomas, Adam II, Sara and Allyson along with great-grandchildren Eric and Jaxson. She also leaves behind her dear friend Holli, as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and many beloved friends and family members.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, September 14, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 576 Concord Rd, Glen Mills, PA 19342. A luncheon will follow at the parish hall. Burial will be private.

Norma’s life was a tapestry of joy, love, and unforgettable moments. She will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
