Matthew John McVey

Matthew John McVey died on July 22, 2023, at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife, Alexandra (nee Badis). His first wife, Isabelle (nee MacTaggart), passed away in 1991.  Matt is survived by his 5 children with Isabelle: Matthew (Awilda), BarbaraJean Gonsorick, Susan Henry (Robert), Cynthia Everitt (Lee), and Isabelle Vesey (James), and Alexandra’s 4 surviving children: Kevin (Cheryl), James (Mary), Brian, and Mary.  He was blessed with 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

 

Matt was born in Philadelphia in 1930 in the Ascension Parish, attended North Catholic High School, married Isabelle in 1951, and moved into the house next door to his childhood home where he lived another 40 years. After serving in the Navy in the1950s, Matt graduated from LaSalle University in 1963 and spent most of his career as an Electronics Engineer for General Electric’s Aerospace Reentry & Systems Division until his retirement in 1991. A lifelong musician (piano, guitar, banjo, concertina, harmonica), Matt enjoyed camping, travelling, and hosting parties.

 

After marrying Alex in 1992, he became an avid gardener. He and Alex volunteered with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for many years.  They also enjoyed spending time with their many grandchildren and watching Korean soap operas and old movies.  


The family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on Sunday, August 20th from 1 to 5 pm at the Southampton Room, 2980 Southampton Road, Philadelphia.  Family and friends are welcome to attend.  Donations can be made to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society via their website:
