Maryann Yates

May 5, 1951 — January 19, 2026

Philadelphia, PA

Maryann Valerie Yates (née Skisuski), 74, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on January 19, 2026 in Philadelphia, PA after an extended illness. Her beloved daughters were by her side.

Maryann was born on May 5, 1951 to Vlear and Nellie Skususki (née Koniak) in Erie, PA. As a child, she enjoyed summers at her grandmother’s farm, sharpening her accordion skills with her dad, and doing just about anything with her mother. Maryann’s younger brother was her best friend, and they spent endless hours together both at war and conspiring. As a teenager, Maryann attended East High School and continued to excel. She became head cheerleader and was on the homecoming court. Her quick wit and humor developed early; as a result, her classmates elected her to emcee the “Eastcapades”, an honor for which she was always proud.

Following graduation, Maryann obtained employment at Metro Health Center, then known as Doctor's Osteopathic Hospital. During her nearly three decade tenure at Metro, she wore many hats. Her longest held position was as Secretary of Medical Education, but her artistic talent also shined. She not only designed the official logo for MHC, but was commissioned to create murals, parade floats, and calligraphy for various applications. She was awarded the First Humanitarian award for the employee who “most demonstrated exceptional compassion and dedication” and was ultimately retained as one of the last staff members as the hospital was closing.

After an early retirement, Maryann enjoyed many years at her beloved home, noting in detail the passing of each season in Wintergreen Gorge. Her home was a magical place, made so in large part because of the wonder and joy Maryann found in the everyday moments there and in life. May the lilac blooms this year be exceptional.

In recent years, Maryann joined Rachael and Erin in Philadelphia. Although she grumbled about city living, she appreciated being close to her daughters, their partners, and her grandchildren, Anna and Theo Carroll.

Maryann loved laughing, telling or hearing a dirty joke, romantic comedies, the clearance rack, Coca Cola, fresh produce, natural fibers, candy corn, and handsome young men. She will forever be remembered as the funniest person the world has ever known. She left an impression on everyone she met and will be missed beyond measure.

Maryann is preceded in death by her brother, Vlear Leonard Skisuski; her parents; and her husband, David Albert Yates, to whom she was married for 27 years prior to his death in 2000.
