STEWART MARY HENDRICKSON June 30, 1931 - Dec. 29, 2024 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Hendrickson Stewart on December 29, 2024. A longtime resident of Philadelphia and Lansdowne with some years spent in Denver and New York City. Mary graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1953 with an emphasis on languages and classics, then taught Latin at Masterman and Penn Charter for many years. Along with her husband, George Scott Stewart, III (d. 2020) she was a dedicated and generous parishioner of S. Clements Church and a longtime member of The Franklin Inn and The Orpheus Club. Ever the intellectual, Mary had a deep love for reading, particularly history, and writing. Surrounded by her beloved library (and several cats), she was most at home sitting in her living room in her favorite chair, a cat on her lap, in the middle of several books and numerous newspapers listening to classical music. She was also a self-published author of two books and pursued bookbinding and painting. Curious and determined, Mary was always up for a challenge. She taught herself ancient Roman cuisine, which she served to her family and community. Mary preferred to drive stick shift hatchbacks - she particularly loved her 1996 and 2000 GTI VR6s and a later Sonic Turbo. Scott and Mary also traveled extensively around Europe and spent decades of summers at the shore enjoying Island Beach State Park and sailing their little boat in Toms River. Mary is survived by her two sons, George H. Stewart and Edward S. Stewart. Services will be held Saturday January 25th at 11 A.M. at St. Clements Church in Philadelphia with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to PAWS Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society.
