Kathleen Joy Propert died on 23 January 2024 at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. She is survived by her mother, M. Joyce Winstead, or Richmond, Virginia, her brother, David Bruce Propert, his wife, Amber, and their two sons, Benjamin Ambrose ("Jamie") and Rhys Llewellyn, all of Alexandria, Virginia and her cat Batgirl. She was predeceased by her father, David Boyd Propert and his wife Ann Fritz Bennett. She was born March 7,1959 in Washington, DC and raised in Richmond Virginia.
In 1974 she attended the Governor’s School for the Gifted at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton Virginia, where she made many lifelong friends. She graduated from Manchester High School in 1976 and went on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating with a BS in Applied Biological Sciences in 1982.
She earned a MS in Biostatistics from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) in 1984, and continued on to attain an ScD in Biostatistics in 1989. Her dissertation was entitled Methods for Smoothing Longitudinal Data Using Locally Weighted Generalized Least Squares Regression.
She served on the Biostatistics faculty at HSPH 1991-1996. In 1996 she moved to Philadelphia and became Professor of Biostatistics on the Faculty, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Her other interests included knitting, crocheting, stained glass, painting, and other types of art, especially any involving arthropods. She was a lifelong cat lover and “owner”.
A service of remembrance will take place on Saturday, March 2nd, at 11:00 a.m. at Bon Air Presbyterian Church, 9201 W. Huguenot Road, North Chesterfield, VA, 23235.
