With heavy hearts and loving memories, we announce the passing of Katherine Stepp Gallagher, who departed this world on June 18, 2026, at the age of 66, after a courageous battle with heart disease. Katherine was born on May 18, 1960, in the vibrant city of Ann Arbor, Michigan, to loving parents Leroy and Barbara Stepp, who predeceased her and now welcome her home with open arms.
Katherine was a beloved wife to Edward Gallagher, with whom she shared a life filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Sarah Clendaniel, Erica Steele, and Alex Rankin, who survive her and carry forward her legacy of kindness, generosity, and strength. Katherine was also the proud and devoted grandmother to six beautiful grandchildren- Karissa Popp, Riley Mierzwa, Dakota Mierzwa, Kenzie Steele, Natalie Steele, and Milo Clendaniel. She adored them beyond measure and they brought immense joy to her life.
A graduate of Chelsea High School in Chelsea, Michigan, Katherine embarked on a career in the culinary world that was as rich and flavorful as her personality. She dedicated her professional life to the restaurant industry, where she worked with passion and precision as a food prep and sous chef at the renowned Common Grill Restaurant in Chelsea, Michigan. Her colleagues and patrons alike admired her culinary skills and her ability to infuse every dish with a touch of love. After retiring from the kitchen, Katherine found happiness in a second career as a certified nursing assistant. She spoke often of how fulfilling it was to care for her residents in their final years, and she took greatpride in the compassion and standard of care she provided.
Katherine's talents extended far beyond her occupations. She was a gifted artist who found solace and joy in the world of creativity, often expressing herself through her art with a unique and personal flair. Though life’s demands often kept her from her easel, Katherine always hoped to return to her artistic passions. Music was another of Katherine's great loves, and She found immense pleasure in singing.
Katherine's true essence was reflected in her personal qualities. She was a kind and generous soul who would help anyone in need, often putting others before herself. Her warm and approachable nature made her easy to talk to about pretty much anything, and she had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel heard and valued.
As we remember Katherine, we celebrate a life well-lived. A life marked by love, creativity, and unwavering kindness. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched with her warmth and generosity.
A small memorial will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, June 28th at Trap Pond State Park in Laurel, Delaware for family and friends who wish to honor her.
