Jonathan Edwards, lovingly known as “Eds,” passed away suddenly and tragically on June 9 at the age of 48.

Born in London, England, his family moved to the states when he was a child—to Texas, then New Jersey, and finally Pennsylvania. He was the eldest son of Martha and David Edwards of Forest of Dean, UK, and is survived by his parents and his three brothers: Jeremy, Jared, and James.

He leaves behind his beloved son, David, a bright, curious boy who shares his dad’s love of science, dinosaurs, art, and LEGO.

Jon touched countless lives through his work, A well-known figure in Philadelphia’s bar and restaurant scene, he spent years bartending and managing restaurants throughout the city. He organized events for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, helped neighbors, and offered thoughtful conversation and a laugh to anyone in need.

Though born abroad, Jon was a true Philly guy. He studied at the Art Institute, loved soft pretzels, Rittenhouse Square, the local music scene, and the Eagles. He had a sharp mind, a generous spirit, and a wicked sense of humor. He often called himself goofy, but those who knew him best remember a man who was fiercely loyal, and unfailingly kind. After the loss of his dog, Pudgy, he found comfort in caring for friends’ pets, always showing tenderness toward animals.

In 2020, after surviving a violent attack, Jon showed extraordinary resilience—relearning how to walk and speak with quiet determination. Despite the trauma, he continued to dream. He wrote constantly and hoped to perform stand-up comedy once he overcame his nerves.

Above all, Jon was genuine. He spoke with honesty, heart, and humor—continually thinking of others, and hoping for a better future for his son, his family, and his true friends.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 12, at 2:00 p.m. in Rittenhouse Square, followed by a gathering at Cavanaugh’s Headhouse on South 2nd Street. To help his family with expenses and bringing him home to rest, donations can be made here:
