James Taylor Ranney passed away peacefully in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 25, 2025, at the age of 80. Born in Madison, WI, James possessed a keen intellect that fueled his passions for voracious reading and persuasive writing. He attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison before earning his J.D from Harvard Law.

James had diverse interests and pursued a multifaceted legal career. He began his career serving in the District Attorney's office of Philadelphia. He later shared his expertise in Constitutional Criminal Procedure with students at the University of Montana, where he subsequently served as Legal Counsel. He departed academia to establish a private practice in Missoula, MT, where he became a trusted advocate for numerous clients. Upon his return to Philadelphia, he resumed legal education as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Widener Law School, where he taught a seminar on International Law.

He was the author of "Pennsylvania Criminal Law and Practice," a valuable resource for legal professionals. His lifelong interest in international law and alternative dispute resolution culminated in his book, "World Peace Through Law," which garnered praise from esteemed scholars in the field, including Hans Blix and Roger Clark.

A devoted and loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife Harriett, his brother Richard, his son Justin, and his grandchildren August and Amara.
