J. Alexander "Sandy" MacMurtrie

January 6, 1928 — February 5, 2023

 

Sandy, on February 5, 2023, of Villanova.  

Born to William J. MacMurtrie, M.D. and Adele Edelman MacMurtrie on January 6, 1928.  

The much loved youngest son in a family of five siblings, each of whom predeceased him. 

They include William J. MacMurtrie Jr, M.D., Adele MacMurtrie Limerick, Ann MacMurtrie Hill, and Francis J. MacMurtrie, who died in 1945 while on patrol in the South Pacific. 

Along with his brothers and sisters, Sandy attended the  

Academy of Notre Dame on Rittenhouse Square.  

Upon graduation from The Square, Sandy followed in his brothers’ footsteps, enrolling at St. Joseph’s Prep. In 1945, he entered the 

Society of Jesus as a novitiate at the Seminary in Wernersville. He was one of 13 young men in his graduating class at The Prep to do so. 

Sandy continued his Jesuit education at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, then taught Latin and Greek at Georgetown Preparatory School  in Washington DC. He left the Jesuit Society in 1955 to pursue a career in fundraising. Serving as Director of Development, Sandy led fundraising campaigns for several notable institutions, including Hahnemann University  Hospital, Paoli Hospital, and The Academy of Natural Sciences of  Philadelphia. 

Sandy possessed the best penmanship known to man, and was renowned for his beautiful handwritten letters. He also had great expertise in giving driving directions, an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Winston  Churchill, and a deep affection for time spent with his family in Cape May, New Jersey. 

He is survived by his four children: Sandy Jr. (Denise), Carolyn MacMurtrie, Michelle Constable (Jeff), and Eileen MacMurtrie (Seth Zuckerman).  He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, one great grandchild, and many loving nieces and nephews. 

Relatives and friends are invited to his Mass of Christian Burial, Tuesday, February 21st at 11:00AM, St. John Neumann Church, 380 Highland Avenue, Bryn Mawr, PA.  

Visitation at 10:30AM. Interment Calvary Cemetery.
