Clifford Steven Labaw
Clifford "Cliff" Steven Labaw, age 76, died peacefully at his home in Philadelphia, PA, on January 30, 2025 after a long illness. Cliff was born on September 19, 1948 to Louis Warne Labaw and Mildred "Mickey" Whitlow Labaw and grew up in Bethesda, MD. Cliff earned his Bachelor's Degree in chemistry at Ursinus College and his Master's Degree in chemistry at the University of Delaware. In 1973, he moved to Philadelphia to work as a chemist at Smith Kline and French Pharmaceuticals (now GlaxoSmithKline). Cliff worked there for 33 years, until his retirement in 2006. There he met his wife Kathleen, also a chemist at the time. Cliff is survived by his wife of 41 years as well as their only child. In addition to his wife and child, Cliff is also survived by his younger brother.
Cliff was always happiest in the outdoors, spending much of his free time hiking, backpacking, biking, and whitewater kayaking. He was an avid problem solver and DIY enthusiast, unafraid to take apart a broken washing machine to repair it or completely renovate a kitchen. He was a strong believer in fitness and was a familiar face at his gym, where he made many friends. Even as his health declined, he still regularly worked out. He enjoyed walks around his neighborhood, chatting with people he encountered and petting friendly dogs. Cliff was known for his sense of humor and warmth, as well as his willingness to always lend a hand to family, friends, and neighbors with his repair skills, his physical strength, and his practical advice. Cliff lived a good life on his own terms, and he is sorely missed by his family and friends.
In accordance with Cliff’s wishes there will be no service, and family members will honor his passing in private.
