Downingtown, PA

Bernard J. Barrett Jr., 87, of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 12, 2026.

Born on February 25, 1938, in Manhattan, New York, to the late Bernard J. Barrett Sr. and Amy Shover, Bernard was a man of quiet strength, deep faith, and unwavering devotion. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he carried the values of God, country, and family throughout his entire life.

BJ’s life was defined by his heart for service. A dedicated member of his community, he loved volunteering his time at church and was a familiar, encouraging face on the sidelines of youth games, where he served as a referee for many years. Whether serving his congregation or mentoring young athletes, he had a unique gift for making everyone he encountered feel truly seen and respected.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen (Prodoehl) Barrett; his children, Rick Barrett (Wanda), Bernard John Barrett III (Pamela), Michael Barrett (Christine), Cynthia Barrett, and Margaret Wood (Ray); his step-children, Joseph Lennon (Joycelyn), Sean Lennon, and Melissa Himmelberger; eleven grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren; his brother, George Barrett (Margaret); and his sisters, Carol Purpura (Gary), Janet Grosso, Ruth Barrett, and Joan Pawelec.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Gerald and Robert, and his sisters, Catherine and Barbara.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the many friends, neighbors, and caregivers who provided comfort and support during the medical challenges of these past few years. Your kindness made a difficult journey easier to bear, and we truly could not have done it alone.
