Alan Grolnic, beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2024 at the age of 79. Born in Philadelphia on October 30, 1944, Alan was the middle son of Simon and Rose Grolnic. He attended Lincoln High School and later earned degrees from Temple University, which laid the foundation for his lifelong passion for education.
Alan devoted over 40 years to shaping young minds as a dedicated educator in the Philadelphia School District, teaching at both Ferguson and Farrell Elementary schools. His commitment to his students and love for learning left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
An avid chess enthusiast, Alan traveled widely to participate in chess tournaments. He shared his passion for the game by teaching and tutoring countless players, fostering a love for chess in others and forming lasting friendships through the game.
Alan and Marlene Boxley were married for over 52 years, their union marked by love and loyalty that endured until his final day. He was preceded in death by his younger brother Sidney. Alan is survived by his wife, Marlene; his elder brother, Martin; two nephews, Joseph (Marlo) and Steven (Sarah); a niece, Robyn; two great-nephews and a great-niece. He also leaves behind a wide circle of cherished friends and extended family, all of whom will miss him dearly.
Alan’s warmth, wisdom, and dedication to his family, students, and the chess community will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
