Philip Sterling Singer passed away on February 9, 2022 at the age of 70 at Presbyterian Hospital.
Phil was born on January 11, 1952, in Philadelphia, to Irving and Dorothy (Macaulay) Singer. The Robin to his Batman was his younger brother Gary Singer; however, they did not become crime fighters. On March 3, 1973 Phil married the love of his life, Josephine Kapusta, whose life’s mission became correcting his faults and telling the man who “knew everything” that he was definitely wrong. Together they raised 2 practically perfect children, Justin and Amber.
Phil was quite relieved when his “perfect” children found their better halves, Hugh McAnany (for Amber) and Yao Xu (for Justin). His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, Aaron and Cora McAnany and Emmy Singer. Aaron and Pop Pop spent hours playing chess and watching movies. When young, Aaron enjoyed gossiping with Phil at the 55 and older condo’s coffee klatch. Cora spent time baking with Pop Pop and taking rides on his motorized chair. She loved his special pancakes that were bigger than the plate. Phil entertained them with his Bobby and Squiggy stories before bed. Emmy introduced Pop Pop to every YouTube channel, guaranteed his knowledge about Disney princesses, and serenaded him with her epic ballads. She continued the tradition of riding about in his motorized chair.
Music was Phil’s passion. He was a singer and drummer in several recognized bands. He loved entertaining and was known for his famous pool parties with the best barbecues. He fashioned his basement as a Blockbuster Video with every new release, including a sound system that literally shook the house. He hosted ballet dancers from around the world and “starred” as Mother Ginger on stage. His epic story telling remains unparalleled. Phil owned and operated his dental laboratory with never a dull moment, and he helped provide a number of athletes and celebrities with a new smile!
A Celebration of Phil’s Life will be planned for the spring. Phil is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, brother, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is beloved by his family and many friends.
