John Bartle Everts, Jr of Media, PA passed away in hospice on August 16, 2021. Born in White Plains, New York on November 27, 1939, son of the late Rev. John B. and Dorothy Bradley Everts. Everts graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1961 and began a career in journalism at the Manhattan Bureau of the Stars & Stripes newspaper. He went on to work in the sports information departments at Franklin & Marshall and Temple University. Everts was a longtime member of the Philadelphia Sportswriters Association and received the Basketball Old Timers “good guy” award in 1998. In retirement he worked on the statistics crew of the Philadelphia 76ers, and was the timekeeping official for the 2008 NBA Finals games in Boston. Everts was an avid Phillies fan who enjoyed reading, classic movies, the New York Times crossword puzzle, and spending time with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife Judith (nee Pyle), children Gretchen Valianti (Christopher) of Pitman, NJ, Kristin Nyce (Dr. Mark) of Savannah, GA, Bart Everts of Philadelphia; grandchildren Carl Valianti (Deidra), Megan Marotta (Matthew), Matthew, Thomas, and Leah Nyce, great-granddaughter Maci Marotta, and his sister Deborah Behling (Richard) of Wilmington, DE. A celebration of his life will be held in October, friends are encouraged to share memories and make a donation in his name to a charity or mutual aid organization of their choice.
