Susan Hughes

August 31, 1939 — December 25, 2019

Susan Jane Honeywell Hughes, widow of Richard Hughes, long time resident of Malvern, and more recently of Chester Springs, passed away on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2019 at Presbyterian Village in Rosemont, PA. It was just a few minutes before midnight when she actually passed surrounded by family.

Sue is survived by daughters Bonnie Hughes of Berwyn and Wendy Allen (Joel) of Radnor, son Jeffrey Hughes (Eileen Naughton) of Ashburn, Virginia, and brother Michael Honeywell (Kay) of Harwich, Massachusetts. She was "Gramma Sue" to nine wonderful grandchildren of whom she was very proud. Kristen Sabbi(Colin) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Devin Allen of Philadelphia, Lauren Sabbi of Berwyn, Chloe Allen of Radnor, Jack, Luke, TJ, Charlie, and Emily Hughes all of Ashburn, Virginia. They will carry her always  in their hearts and memories.

Susan was born on August 31, 1939, the daughter of the late, John and Harriet Bolmeyer Honeywell.  Born and raised in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Susan moved with her family to the Main Line as a teenager, where she graduated from Conestoga High School and went on to attend Rider College. In 1958, she married the boy across the street, Richard Howard Hughes.

Sue was blessed to live happily with Dick raising their children and helping with the family business. She was an active member of Paoli Presbyterian Church and an early proponent of the whole food movement. Gardening, baking and canning were favorite past times until she took up golf and spent more time on the links with Dick. There were many full years of travel and enjoying her grown kids before a sudden illness left Dick incapacitated. Sue cared for him at home until his death in 1996.

In later years Sue worked part time at SEI Investments and kept her heart young by reconnecting with a high school beau which led to weekends exploring Chestertown on the Chesapeake Bay.

Susan will be remembered for her wonderful laugh, warm smile and generous nature but most of all for the love she shared with all of us. In the last weeks she reminded us of how fortunate and grateful she was to have family, friends and the rich life she had lived. She will be greatly missed.

Service will be private.
