Dr. Allan Karstetter, 91
Dr. Allan Karstetter, President Emeritus of Unity College, died peacefully in Malvern, Pa. on Sept. 12, 2018. He was born in Williamson, N.Y. in 1927.
After his service in the army in WWII, he earned a BA degree at SUNY Brockport, a master's degree in speech and theater at Northwestern and a Ph.D. in speech pedagogy at Penn State. His career was primarily in education, as professor and as administrator.
While President of Unity College from 1972 to 1978, he obtained academic accreditation, doubled the enrollment, and significantly improved the college's finances. Before retirement from academia, he served as Provost of the American College of Greece in Athens from 1978-1980. Always intellectually curious, at the age of 68 he earned a law degree at New England School of Law-Boston and practiced child advocacy in Massachusetts. He co-founded a community theater in Texas and directed and designed many productions, enjoyed sailing, which he learned on Lake Winnecook when at Unity College, and competed in 6-wicket croquet while wintering in Hilton Head, S.C.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Nelson of Portland; his son Matthew Karstetter of Phoenixville, Pa., and his daughter the Hon. Emily Karstetter of Boston; three siblings; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life was held on Sept. 15.
