Dr. Jarod Chambers Finlay

 Jarod C. Finlay, age 43, of Philadelphia, died in his home, surrounded by his family, on April 11, 2018.

Jarod was a 1993 graduate of Exeter High school, outside of Reading, PA. He earned his BA in Math and Physics from Alfred University in 1997, and MA and PhD degrees in Physics from the University of Rochester in 1999 and 2004 respectively.

Jarod began his career at the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. He was a faculty member in the Department of Radiation Oncology and the Director of the Master of Medical Physics program. Jarod taught graduate level classes, mentored students, and did research at the University of Pennsylvania Abramson Cancer Center, where he had recently been promoted to Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology. His field of research included tissue optics and photodynamic therapy, disciplines to which he contributed, as author and coauthor, over 120 publications.

In addition to his expertise in the field of medical physics, Jarod had an insatiable curiosity and was always interested in learning new things about the world around him. His varied interests included throwing pottery, riding mountain bikes, and woodworking projects around the home.  

While his accomplishments were many and diverse, he will be remembered most as a wonderful husband and Dad for whom family always came first. His friends and family all appreciated his sense of humor and his genuine desire to be helpful to those around him.

Jarod is survived by his wife Leah, his daughters Mikaela and Anya, his parents Bill and Beth Finlay of Reading, PA; his brothers Liam Finlay of Corvallis, OR and Conor Finlay of Portland, OR; niece Fiona Finlay of Corvallis, OR, and nephews Rowan Finlay of Corvallis, and McCoy Finlay of Portland.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Jarod on Sunday, May 6, at 3:00 PM at the Germantown Friends Meeting House, 47 W. Coulter Street, Philadelphia, PA 19144.
