Brunhilde (Hilde) Justine Eager, 71, suddenly passed away on November 14, 2016 due to complications from pneumonia. Hilde was born on December 20, 1944 in Oppenheim, Germany to the late Anna Marie (Oma) Buba.
Hilde was born during WWII and grew up in a single mother household during very difficult times following the war. She was an apprenticed seamstress and began working at the age of 15. In 1970, she moved to the United States to begin a new chapter in her life with her three young children. She embraced America, like so many immigrants, and settled into her new country. She lived in Texas, Mays Landing and Penns Grove NJ, with her final years spent in Drexel Hill, PA. While back in Germany in 1976, the family welcomed Hilde’s fourth child.
Hilde held numerous jobs throughout her life that included stints at a clothing factory, housekeeping at Salem County Memorial Hospital, and a cashier at the Italian Kitchen and Deepwater Diner. She took immense pride in her work and was respected by all for her work ethic. Hilde loved decorating her homes; that included gardening, refurbishing floors, painting, wallpapering and making handmade crafts. Her favorite time of the year was always the Christmas Holidays where she put up as many as seven Christmas trees and completely decorated both the inside and outside of her home. She would bake dozens of beautifully arranged cookies that she would give as gifts for family and friends. Most importantly, it was the part of year that she could spend the most time with her four beloved grandsons. Hilde was a loving and active grandmother who was involved in all her grandchildren’s lives. When they were born, she was a reliable caregiver for them all and relished the role. She will be incredibly missed by her grandsons due to the amazing bond she was able to form with each of them.
Hilde was a fighter throughout her life. She overcame poverty as a child, as well as the challenges of moving to a new country and learning a new language. As a testament to her physical and mental tenacity, she survived esophageal cancer and lived the past 15 years without an esophagus. She had amazing strength, humility, and a zest for life.
Hilde is survived by her brother, Jobst Buba, her sister-in-law, Bärbel, and niece, Nathalie, from Koln, Germany. She is also survived by four children: her son, Larry Eager, of Philadelphia, PA; her daughter, Patty Eager, of Newark, DE; her son, Mike Eager and his wife, Paige, from Walkersville, MD; her son, Richard Eager, of Broomall, PA; her former daughter in-law, Kimmie Brady Eager, of Broomall, PA; and her grandchildren: Mark Mesogianes, Ricky Eager, Robby Eager, and Cameron Eager.
